What to Do in Zagreb in 12 Hours?

If you have 12 hours in Zagreb, you can experience both the city’s historic core and its modern lifestyle at a relaxed pace.

Start at Ban Jelačić Square, the heart of the city and a natural meeting point. From here, explore Lower Town (Donji Grad), with its elegant Austro-Hungarian architecture, wide boulevards, and green parks forming the famous Lenuci’s Horseshoe, including landmarks such as the Croatian National Theatre and the Botanical Garden. This part of the city is ideal for a slow morning walk and coffee stop.

After exploring the Lower Town, return to Ban Jelačić Square before continuing toward the Old Town, starting with Dolac Market, Zagreb’s main open-air market and a lively part of the city’s everyday rhythm. Just next to Dolac stands Zagreb Cathedral, a landmark with almost 1,000 years of history. It began as a single-tower Romanesque church and gradually developed into the grand Gothic structure seen today. With its twin spires, it remains the tallest building in Croatia. Inside, the cathedral guards the 900-year-old cape of King Ladislav, displayed in the upper inner museum area — a symbol of Zagreb’s medieval roots.

This area belongs to the historic settlement of Kaptol, which for centuries served as the clerical headquarters of the Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Just above Dolac Market lies Opatovina Street, today known for its small craft beer bars and microbreweries. Over the last ten years, Croatia has seen a strong rise in craft beer culture, especially ale and IPA styles, produced by small local breweries. Alongside Croatian craft beers, many bars here also offer some of the newest German and American craft beer brands, making this a perfect spot for a relaxed early afternoon tasting.

From Kaptol, take a well-earned lunch break in a traditional restaurant or modern bistro, followed by a relaxed walk along Tkalčićeva Street, famous for its café culture and local atmosphere.

After lunch, walk through the Stone Gate, marking the transition from Kaptol to Gradec, the fortified Upper Town. Inside Gradec, visit the Lotrščak Tower, where you can see the famous Grič Cannon, fired every day exactly at noon. The blast is as loud and authentic as a medieval cannon, just without the cannonball.

Right next to the tower is the Zagreb Funicular, one of the safest transportation systems in the world, with zero recorded incidents in over 110 years of operation, connecting Lower Town and Gradec in under a minute.

Continue to St. Mark’s Square, famous for its colorful tiled roof and historic buildings. In the Upper Town, take time for a museum visit, such as the Museum of Broken Relationships or the Zagreb City Museum, to better understand the city’s social history and identity.

In the late afternoon, descend back toward the city center and unwind in Zrinjevac Park or explore one more museum or gallery of your choice.

End your 12 hours the Zagreb way — with a long coffee or evening drink. In this city, coffee (and increasingly craft beer) is not just a habit, but a way of life.
